Where to start?

Updated: Jun 22, 2022

Ever watch the passing clouds and ponder the thoughts, "Hey, don't those clouds look like..." and you started seeing it as what you think until they started forming another figure?

Back when I was young, I'd frequently look up in the sky and imagine what those clouds were saying. A figure of a running man, a dragon fighting another beast, or a castle made out of clouds. Most often, I find myself stuck looking until those figures turn into stories in my mind.

Well, clouds are like that, forming any shapes and figures they want to.

But it's always up to us on how we envision what they made, perceiving it as something our mind recognizes.

To write a story, we have to envision what we want to write and know what our hearts and minds tell us to write. Because we can never write something we don't put our passion and mind to it, or it will end up one of the pieces we'd hate.

So, how should we start?

Well, you have to think about the plot, characters, and setting, but all of them are either vague images or none at all in our minds. But like how we envision clouds as the things we see them as, finding the idea to write is quite similar to it.

We envision, rather imagine.

We can try to imagine from nothing but our memories, exploring and creating with our minds the scenes we want, or we can try to imagine from something we stumble in our path. For instance, a twig on the sidewalk turns out to be a magic wand that was forgotten by time and waiting for its rightful owner or the girl entering a small shop turns out to be a secret agent.

There's not really a limit on how you would imagine, but imagination still seeks foundation in reality. You can't imagine something you haven't seen yet but you can compare it to something you have. Like, for a child to imagine a tiger that he/she had never seen, she will envision it like a cat but rather bigger.

So to start writing, you must start imagining.

Yaj Imagination

Our dreams might be just our own imagination but we have our own way to make it a reality. Mine is making something out of it.
