As a newbie writer, I learned that the first paragraph also determines whether the reader will have the desire to even continue reading. A hook that stops the reader from putting away the book and choosing another story.
But how can one write a good hook? Well, I don't know the answer to what a perfect hook is like but it should at least make the reader ponder and question what is going on. Make the reader feel the urge of being left out of something, then slowly tell them what is happening.
As human beings, we're filled with curiosity. We venture into a dark cave or open a chest out of the desire to know what is that thing we don't know. And to satisfy this urge within our nature, we simply do what we humans do. Explore, experiment, and learn what it is we don't know.
